why the )(&*&%*(&*)*& do they always keep changing oil filter numbers and sometimes making them smaller. i have said for years it would save money and be easier to produce if the made a filter fit many cars....have I answered my own question or is there a technical reason????
also seems a larger filter would do a better job of filtlering since there is more area, right or wrong????
I have gone to K&N oil filters for all my cars as I am suspecting the quality of the "new" A/C filters. I really liked the old PF35L synthetic A/C filter but don't like their current offerings very much.

I have switched all of my vehicles to Napa Gold filters. Easy to get and they are supposed to be one of the few top filters (left) in the US.

I hear your pain. I bought a filter for my daily driver only to get home, take the old one out, drain the oil, open the new one, only to find it was incorrectly boxed and wouldn't fit
If ALL cars used the same size/thread etc it would definitely be easier.
Of course on my above oil change, I had already put the old filter in the box for the new one so I could return it. Still have that filter sitting on my shelf in the garage. reminds me to open a couple of filter boxes while at the store to make sure they are boxed correctly.
Maybe I mis-read your original post, but this is what I thought you may have meant.
