Default Casting Number Question...

I located one of the casting numbers on my 80's engine block. Aside from dropping the oil pan, is there another way to tell whether or not I have 2 or 4 bolt main?

I've read through the documentation on mortec.com and while there was a TON of info, I couldn't find what I was looking for.

Is there any other way? The block casting is 14010207 and the head casting numbers are 462624.

I ask for the wisdom of the corvettefourm gurus.

Thanks,

Chris

Might start here :
SERIAL NUMBERS Body & Chassis Coupe 1Z87L89S400001 -1Z87L89S453807
The 5th digit varied: 8 = base, 6 = L82 (4 bolt).This will confirm "original engine" for your Vette.

I'll see what I can dig up on your casting numbers.

14010207...350...80-85...2 or 4

Note could be either. Block exterior should also be the same. Sorry .

I forgot to mention that I have an L48. But, I remember hearing that if GM was out of 2 bolts, they threw in a 4 bolt.

Does that make sense?

They may have done that. But looks like you may have to drop your pan.By the way,has your engine ever been re-built ?

Not positive on the rebuilding. The odometer states 79000 miles though. The car is great shape so I son't suspect that it's 179000 miles.

Thanks for the head info...
Are these the 'smog' heads that everybody talks about? If so, what are my aternatives?

g.m. kept no precise records of wich car got what blocks.your engine can be a 2 or 4 bolt main. unless you are over 400 h.p. it doesn't matter.a 2 bolt block with splayed cap 4 bolt are said to be even better than the factory 4 bolt.

99 times out of 100, an L-48 will have 2 bolt mains.

Check this out for me and report back please...There is a boss on the rear of the block right at the top of the bellhousing flange. Check it to see if it has been tapped for threads. I am betting yours is not threadded and that would indicate 2 bolt main. If it was tapped, I would say you would have a 4 bolt main. Do not tell anyone about this little bit of trivia and it will be our little secret here on the C3 CF board. Pinky-promise you guys!
