As close to the collection point of the gases as possible and and at an orientation between 10 & 2 o'clock (if located in a horiz. location) so that condensation does not get on the sensor as I recall.

If you have headers, it will need to be in the collector. If you have exhaust manifolds, it needs to be in the few inches of exhaust pipe.

I put mine in the exhaust pipe immediately after the collector. I didn't want to remove the header and drill and weld into it so about an inch or two out of the header collector I installed the bung. I removed the pipe for easy drilling and welding.
I get an almost immediate response. Pull out to pass and the gage responds to the increased fuel flow, let off and it jumps back to lean.

I just drilled a hole in my pass.side sidemount at about 7 o`clock. Didn`t like the idea of having the door slam in to the sond if i would mount it vertically..

I think you want to be as close the heads as possible in order to heat the sensor too. Mine are self heating but some aren't. I have three of those dang sensors....

Thanks for the replies. Now where to I hook the positive wire for the A/F meter to? I want to keep the meter portable, not permanent mounted.

Solder alligator clips on each end of a 3-4 foot wire. Use this to hook up your meter. Use an IGN output on the fuse panel for interior use...clip one of the alligator jaws to any positive source (horn relay, alt?) under the hood for use there.

What A/F meter did you buy, where did you get it, and how much was it? I am thinking about doing the same thing.

Let me see if I got this right. You mount the sensor in the exhaust manifold pipes itself as close to the head as possible and before you get to the collector or the exhaust pipe itself? Dem some little pipes......

go down to the pipe itself, not in the exhaust manifold pipes.

Gotcha! Couple of things I read however said to stay within 2"-10" of the head.......Of course it won't be far mounting right after the flange.

Thanks again guys.......gonna get it welded on tomorrow!! I still don't have any idea whether I'm running rich, or lean......will no soon, I hope!

and for the wiring, the gauge will have a wiring diagram. Your best bet is using a 3 wire heated sensor. I put my Autometer gauge in place of the clock.

I was just looking through my AIM and noticed that I have an existing oxy sensor (unhooked) already in the exhaust pipe just below the drivers side manifold. Haven't check yet, any chance this new sensor going in where the old one is?

Put it in the right side (passenger) manifold. That way you have
two sensors for comparisons. There is a purple? wire that runs from
the original sensor to the computer behind the driver. Tap into that
and a ground for connections to the first sensor...

Enjoy.
