I have found an old junk yard last worked in the early 1970s with alot of 1960s cars with the engines still intact. what are the most desirable SBC Heads and how can you tell what they are by looking at them ? Are there passinger cars I could get better heads off of for my stock 75 ? were most of the heads back then 2:02 valves ?
just remember, old engines (pre 74ish) dont have hardened seats. I ran into this issue with the 487x's i had for my car. One of the seats were so bad you could put the new seat in without cutting the old one out. Then you have to deal with heads without accessory holes too...
461,461x,462,462x,s.b.c. heads, these are the last three digits that are underneath the valve covers, all these are good heads.
049,781,820,236,241, all good big block heads.
This is only an advantage if you have a machine shop that can do the rebuilding job inexpensively. Otherwise, you're better off buying a set of new heads. Everyone around here knows which ones I recommend...
Some of the old heads like the "camel-humps" have value to restorers, but for today you are better off starting with Vortecs or aftermarket and going from there. They flow better, have hardened seats, and you won't have to put guides in them for a while.
By the time you make the investment into making old heads able to live on unleaded fule, you are better off buying Dart SR Torquer replacement cylinder heads or aluminum heads.
