The tube for the oil dipstick fell off when I removed the dipstick to check the level. How do I put it back in? The tube didn't look broken. The end that was in the block looked fine. I could see the taper to it where it appreared it would stick into the block....however....it seemed too short for it to go into the block??? Just setting the end of the tube on the hole in the block caused the dipstick pullring to be pretty far down (about where I remember it sitting) I can't see it going another 2 inches down to where the taper in the bottom of the tube gets bigger. There is also a metal bracket down there (looks like a combination heatsheild for the plugwires, and some sort of holddown for the dipstick tube) Is THAT how the tube is supposed to be held on?
I remembered reading in other threads about putting a piece of wood over the end of the tube and hitting it with a hammer to knock the tube into the hole...I tried that and due to the angle I bent the tube. Ordered a new one from Eklers and have it waiting to go in....though it seems the one they sent is longer so I'll have to cut it down a little.
What year is your car? You shouldn't have to cut it to make it fit.
It's a 68.
The "longer" is on the end that the dipstick goes into. On the stock tube it flairs out a little at the top where the dipstick sits when you put it in...on the tube I got from Ecklers that flair is there...but there's another 3/4" section after that. It would fit but that would cause the dipstick to raise out of the oil thus not letting me get a correct reading on the oil level.
The dipstick tube on my 68 sb never stays in when I pull the dipstick. It doesn't seem to have a very good fit at all.
It doesn't really bug me though, so I just leave it alone.

Thanks for the info. My problem is it DOES bug me haha....I guess it's one of those things I'm **** about. My main thing is that this car is SUPER dirty underneath the hood from 30 something years of not being cleaned. I wanted to blast away all the crud...but didn't want to get degreaser/oven cleaner/whatever else I use in the hole when washing..
My wife just wonders why I can't be **** about the dishes or vacuuming
