Default A/C brackets for headers?

I'm (thinking about) changing over to headers. Where do I find brackets to adapt the A/C compressor to fit? The stock brackets are constructed to fit the cast-iron manifolds and do not appear to be compatible with a header set-up.

Is there a way to adapt by using spacers or must you buy new brackets?

Thanks in advance,

I modified my stock bracket and used a couple of stand offs another Forum member made for me.

Tim,
Glad to hear that those stand offs worked out ok for you.

74FLCONV,

I didn't get any pics of the modifications that I did to the stock bracket, but here is a shot of it installed with the stand offs that I made.

They are simply peices of 5/8" steel rod cut to the correct length (thickness of the stock manifold minus the thickness of the header flange), then bored to accept the 3/8" bolt.

The bracket must have a considerable amount of material removed from the center section to clear the #2 header tube, but this can be done very easily with a die grinder and a high speed steel cutting tool.

If you have the long a/c compressor the vendors sell a bracket for the rear that attaches between two of the tubes. With the short compressor the bracket is not necessary and simply requires a spacer.

Yes I have the large compressor, but have yet to find a vendor selling said bracket.

Kevin,

Yea, I ended up having to remove some additional material from the front mount but after that it fit great.

Thanks again.

Tim

74FLCONV,

After you have the stand-offs, modifying the existing bracket isn't too big of a deal.

I can try and take a picture if you need one but I don't know if I can get the right angle so you can see the change.

I think I have the instructions that came with my headers that show what has to be changed it you want me to scan it in and send it to you.

I'm going to be doing this myself soon and I found this article with some similar pics you can enlarge.

That Summit bracket looks slick but it looks like it doesn't bolt on to the front bracket like the stock cast iron piece. Would that make any difference?

I just remembered that I have the un-opened install kit that came with my headers (I thought it was left out of the box, but found it later after I no longer needed it). There is a bracket in the package that is most likely what you are looking for.
Let me check when I get home to be sure that is a compressor bracket in there. If it is, it's your's for the cost of shipping.

I've got the braket that Hedman sold me w/my headers if you want it. My installation went like the picture above though, using the OEM bracket instead. It is much more stout than the flimsy one that they sell for headers.

Thanks for the help/offers. I'll try customizing my stock bracket and, if I "F" it up, I'll hit you guys up for the freebies.

It looks like the bracket that was included with my Hooker headers was not for the AC compressor but actually an adaptor for the old style alternator mount. Don't think it will do you any good. Sorry about that.

Precisely what I did.

So, I'm assuming you use header bolts for all holes with the exception of the A/C bracket mount holes? Stock iron manifold bolts in those locations?

Yep. 3/4" header bolts everywhere but those two.

On the other side I had to use a couple of 1" header bolts with my Alternator mounting since I used an aftermarket bracket.
