Just picked up a "new to me" C3; It has a few problems which hope to get all your help fixing.
the water pump has a cracked housing and simply pours coolant;
any words of wisdom on the project and any recommended particular brand, other tips, etc. I have ramps if needed. Looks like not too hard of a project.
Thanks in advance.
You'll have varying opinions here on this one from AutoZone to A/C Delco. I don't mind spending the money on my C3s and I just go get a "brand new" A/C Delco pump for about $100, then I never have to worry about replacing it again.
I went with an aluminum pump. Its quite a bit lighter than the original cast pump. Also corvettes have a special pump with a shorter shaft I believe, just make sure its the correct one.
There are alot of "while Im at it" projects if your going to be taking the front accessories off too. When I replaced my pump I got new upper and lower hoses and took the radiator to a shop that cleaned and repaired it for 70 bux. I also did the heater core and hoses and thermostat. Should be good for a while!
Also when I re-attached the water pump to the block I used some thread sealant for the bolts as they do enter the water jacket. I had no leaks.
On the subject of radiators....this one looks like it's been around the block......I know this question will get a lot of different responses also, but where is the best place to buy one (Eklers, Mid-america, ???).
I'm sorta on a budget with this car.
Oh yea, Just buy a good. Stay away from the cr@p shoot of discount parts. I went through 3 pumps from Checker and then finally went elsewhere. The first was clearly the wrong size. The second had the heater hose fitting slightly off so when I tightened down the smog pump bracket ('82) it cracked the pump housing at the fitting. The third went on good and fit until I tried to put the fan on, wrong bolt patern. It took me several days by the time I went and got a good pump (the 4th) and put it on. Severeal days was not worth the meger savings. Never again.
If you use discount parts. Make sure they are exactly right before installing.
