While going for a quick ride this morning, from a starting stand still, I got on it a little bit. Immediately upon depressing the accelerator, a grinding sound occurs. But it only lasts for a second or two and doesn't occur again through the cycle of gears. The only time I am hearing this grinding rattling sound is at initial accel. What is this? It seems as though it is coming from the rear of the engine compartment but I can't tell where exactly. It sounds as if it's rocks being flung about from the tire spin but it's coming from the engine compartment, not the rear end. Any ideas?
Could be the dust cover to the bellhousing. You describe what I had once, after putting in a new clutch. The tabs got bent slightly and came in contact with the flywheel but only at just taking off.

A broken rubber engine mount would cause the fan to hit the shroud on start. It's real easy to check. Lift your hood, start the engine, hold the brakes and press the gas pedal (if automatic) until the car want to move foward. If manual release the clutch until the engine want to stall. If it's loose, the engine will move upward and the fan will hit.
