I have a 1979 stock auto with 195hp and would like to know what would be the best way to add good hp without too much $$$$. Once I take all the California emissions off since I'm no longer in cali I should gain some hp back. I heard that K&N Air Filter is a good way to start.
I agree first step is to get the exhaust set up. if you have it regestered in florida they dont have emissions laws, get rid of the cats. then start looking into a new cam, if you are going to replace it look into a rolling cam, they hold the valves open longer allowing more air to fill up and increase efficiency at high rpms. also look into new heads.
There is no simple way. And every solution involves a good dose of dollars. If your motor is of high mileage, the easiest way would be to buy a crate motor. If your motor is not too high of mileage, you could get away with a head, cam, intake, header, and carb swap like the others have said. Be sure to ask around before buying aftermarket parts. Like a good cake, you must first start with a good recipe. And many parts are not compatible with others. So some research is in order. There is a wealth of info here on the forum. So it would be wise to use it. Starting with a good air cleaner, an unrestrictive exhaust system, and some tuning, you ought to have a good start .
