Whats the best way to make sure t-tops don't leak?
Don't drive it in the rain.
If all your rubber (the t-top and the windows) are in good condition you should not have any leaks. My top only leaks when a wash my vette because you get a lot more pressure from a garden hose then just normal rain.
They are right, new weather strip should do the trick, but just make sure that you have the water diverters in place on the door sills. These little pieces make a big difference in where the water goes.
Do you mean the diverters in the door below the latch? I still get wet seat belts and my pass side rear compartment is full of water. I wonder if my rear window or T top is leaking? TIA
all my weatherstripping is new and it still leaks lol
back window,t-tops,windshield,side windows...all leak to a degree.
what do the diverters look like,i want to make sure i have them...thanks!
Just got done fixing my leaks on my '69 T-top. New t-top weatherstripping didn't do it. But, the original weatherstripping was old, hard and shabby so it wasn't a bad thing to do. As it turned out, my leaks were coming from the top of the windshield. There is a chrome strip that runs across the top of the windshield on the outside of the car. When water gets under that piece of chrome it can then run into the inside of your car. I used some black silicone sealer and pressed it in with my finger as far as it would go then let it dry. After it was dry, I trimmed off the excess with a single edge razor blade so you can't see any of the sealer. I also scraped the windshield. the leaks are now completely gone. Unfortunately, there is probably some rust (don't know for sure) but it will have to wait until the next time the windshield needs replacing.
i had the metal windshield frame on my 80 replaced and the body shop didn't do a good job.
i still had constant leaks, partly from the windshield that was still leaking (now fixed) and mostly from a bad trim alignment (the body shops excusse was it was and aftermarket frame and aftermarket never fits like the original).
i had to raise the stainless steel trim up a bit to get it to seal up to the t-tops.
Check out your rear vent drain hoses. I had the same problems, changed all the weather stripping, rear window ttops etc. I took off the rear trim qtr pannel, there was the problem. The drain hose had dry rot.
