When you paint metal and plastic parts with the proper dye, do any of you put a final coat of clear paint, whether it be lacquer or otherwise? This could be for protection and or effect, if you do, do you use gloss, semi-gloss, or flat? I'm starting to redye the interior and find that the spray can does do as many parts as I thought.
I used the interior dye for cloth, vinyl, & some plastics, but for some plastic or metal I found semi-gloss to work well.....as a personal preference I choose not to add a clear coat .
Didn't know it worked well on cloth, I knew of metal, plastic, vinyl, leather. When you say cloth, are you referring to the seat belts, C3 Stroker?
Yes....works well on seatbelts, as it is really more of a "dye", than paint and doesn't dry stiff.....I've also used it on cloth speaker grills in other cars.
I did not use a clear or anything else on the metal parts. I also tried it on seat belts but it came out stiff and it still did not dye them very well. They still look blue and not charcoal. Other than the seat belts everything else came out perfect.
Thanks for the info everyone. Do most of you use the spray can, or go the route of the liquid, and use a spray gun. The reason I ask is you would have to use about 4 can to do most of the interior properly. I guess it would also depend of whether your staying with the same colour.
If you have a compressor and small touch up spray gun that is the way to go. You'll get a lot more coverage and it comes out better than the spray cans. Did my 78 over 10 years ago and it still looks good. Only had to do the door panels over once.
Thanks djgrelli, when you use the liquid you purchase from Eckler's or wherever, Do you use it full strength or mix is with laquer thinner or something. I'm not very knowledgable with paint.
I used the cans, and it came out perfect. Make sure you get enough to do all you need done that way all the cans will have the same dye lot and there will be no problem with color match from one can to the next.
If you don't have a spray gun or compressor go with the cans they are fine.
I did my dash and several other pieces in my '73 with the spray cans. I did use the primer first and it came out like new. Put several light coats. After I finished I used armorall type to make it look new. You would never know it was dyed
I didn't know that from can to can you may notice the difference due to dye lot. I only bought one can and it can out better than I thought so I was gonna get more.

Most likely it will be fine. If you have to you can give the parts you did a coat with the new one to match everything up, but I think it will match fine. Good luck

Use it right out of the can. It sprays very well. Remember light coats are always better than one heavy coat. Use a good lacquer thinner to clean off any dirt or grease as this will bleed thru. I didn't use the primer and it has held up fine for 10 years.
Thanks for all the reply's everyone, I just finished the can I had and now need to purchase some more. It sure does make a difference, but I'm alittle hesitant on using it for the leather seats. Has anyone done them yet and how was it? Also has anyone try the dye that didn't come in the spray cans?
