Default Newbie DIYer question...

Please bare with my ignorance, but this is making me a little crazy and I have no one else to ask.

On the driver side of my engine, on the valve cover, closer to the front of the engine compartment is a relatively thin metal tub the comes out of a cap. It goes straight up for about three inches, then 90 degree angle toward driver for an inch the 90 degree angle for a few inches pointing toward the carb. It has no hose attached to it and when the car is running it is has suction.

What is it? should it have a hose attached to it.

Be gentle. :o

My 79 has one something like that on the right side. It doesn't sound as long but it's a breather tube that attaches to the stock air filter housing. I've never tried it but are the valve covers interchangeable from L to R?

Don't feel bad about asking ANY questions here. Some of our cars were owned by Bubba and it's hard to tell what is SUPPOSED to be on the car.

I may have my lengths wrong. I'm at work and trying to picture it from memory. My car does not have the stock air filter housing. I took the cover and air filter off to clean it up a bit and that the first time I saw "the tube".

Sounds like the air inlet tube for the PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) system, on your other valve cover there should be a PCV valve which sucks air into the carb. I think the tube you have is supposed to hooked to the underside of the air filter base. You can buy a breather to stick in valve cover if the orig air cleaner is gone and you to not have a provision for the tube to connect to. What every you do make sure something covers that tube so you are not sucking dirt into the eng.

I would have to test that out. I have never plugged it for more than a second or two, not knowing what it was for.

I'm still not sure what its purpose is....
