Speedo Cable!!??

Speedo Cable!!??
Speedo has been making a noise lately and noticed Saturday it quit working. My '77 has cruise control (that don't work or I need) which has two cables. My question is should I replace which ever cable is broken or convert to a one cable system if this can be done?

I just went through this.
I ended up replacing the cruise unit and the lower cable.
The small upper cable that goes to the dash was working once I would spin it counter clockwise.
I didnt want to have to disassemble the dash to install a 1 piece cable.
Try to remove the upper cable to see if the speedo spins freeely. Have your trusty assistant watch.
Mine works as smooth as silk and I didnt have to touch the speedo. It costs me $120 total though to do it this way. I guess its worth it to me at this point.
