I too like many others have a vibration at 70 mph.Can the tailshaft bushing on a 4speed be replaced without removing trans.Seems like a good place to start.Vibration gets worse with more speed and shifter rattles.

not that you have what i had, but.....look real good at your fan clutch
In my case, the clutch was well worn including pilot bushing, etc.
I would get vibration starting at 70 mph (4th gear).I also felt this in the gear shift.
(Since new clutch, pilot bushing, etc,it is now smooth all the way.) Diagnosis:Go out, run to 70,or where vibration is apparent, disengage clutch, and see if vibration goes away.Another is,in your driveway, disengage clutch, rev motor up/down. This may help to isolate problem.
The first thing I would look at would be my tires and wheels. I had 4 new wheels and tires which I had spun balanced.....so the vibration I had couldn't be comming from them right??? Wrong. There's a saying, even a square wheel can be balanced. What you should have checked is for an out of round condition in either one or more of your tires or wheels. In my case one of my new wheels had a small dent in it causing it to be out of round. Once I replaced it no more vibration. Check for a shop that has the Hunter 9700, it sure worked for me.

Engine runs smooth when revved,Push in clutch or put in neutral at 70+ vibration still there.Had tires balanced on standard machine and no difference. The reason I'm starting with the trans bushing is I know there is too much play. When I had it on the lift I can move the yoke 1/8 to 1/4 inch all around.I don't know if I can replace it on a 4 speed while its stii in the car.Seal has been replaced awhile ago, but didn't think of the bushing.
To answer your question, I can't see any way possible for the tailshaft bushing to be replaced with the trans in the car. I replaced the one on the trans that came out of my car. Can't imagine doing that in the car.
If you can move the yoke that much, that's not a good thing. Your yoke is probably shot, too.
What's the frequency of the vibration? Is it a 'buzz'?
70 MPH is about the speed that an out of balance tire becomes very apparent. I would look there first. If you don't want to spend the money for wheel balancing without being sure that you need it, swap the front and rear tires and see if the vibration shows up in the steering wheel.

Another possibility together with your yoke is the u-joints.Examine them carefully.Since you have to pull the drive shaft,I would replace them. Was the vibration in the rear while you coasted in neutral ?
Yes, to those with vibrating tires, my 70 vert with an older set of tires has been spun balanaced and found that the right front is "out of round". Between 60-70 the car will vibrate, so I keep it at 80 and she rides fine.
Thanks for all the replies.I was hoping I could replace the bushing without removing transmission.I just finished this years winter project and I don't want to down the car again. We have been getting nice weather and all I want to do is drive it,Thanks agaian,Anybody from east Tennessee?
Ive heard you can change your tail bushing on the car ,transmiission shops have a tool they use to do this, call a couple of trans shops,I had the same sloppyiness in the yoke, trans shop said that was normal, My vibration ended up being a wrong pilot bushing too big found that out when I needed a new clutch
