Default throttle cable

The throttle cable on my 69 vette is almost torn to shreds. It seems to be connected to the firewall with a rivited plate. What is the best way to remove the cable and replace t without removing the plate attached to the firewall. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks, ben

There should be two bolts fastening the cable housing to the firewall on the interior side of the firewall.

If its the same as my 76, the cable has a plastic end on it similar to the carb. end which is snapped into the riveted plate. If you go under the dash, you should be able to squeeze the tabs together on plastic end and slip it thru the firewall. I did this just last summer because my cable was looking pretty ratty also. Replaced it with a Lokar stainless steel on. (Note: If your not going to replace it with a factory type, don't waist your time or money on the SPECTRA one that Autozone sells. It failed on me the first time out....quality sucks). Love the one from Lokar though

How did the SPECTRA cable fail on you? I just installed one on my 1980.

The rivited plate is just what the cable installs into, as it's stronger than the fiberglass firewall. Just squeeze the plastic clip on the inside of the firewall and push the cable out towards the engine compartment.

I just pulled the throttle cable on my '71. It should be about the same as a '69. Loosen the gas pedal mounting screws, there are three of them. The one at the top remove (a swivel socket helps), it holds the plate that the cable is attached to. The cable is removed from inside the car. After removing the cable, I used a punch and socket to drive the cable out of the plate. I used a Lokar cable and attached to the plate. Fed the new cable through the firewall and replaced the top screw on the gas pedal. Remove the inner cable, trim the outer housing to legnth, reinsert the cable, and trim for the carb linkage.

I have replaced the throttle cable on my '69 .....access to the bolts are INSIDE the car on the firewall...... you have to almost contort yourself to reach them......removing the old cable is easy.....installing the new one- not.

First, The cable came out of the carberator cable attachment. The set screw hole wasn't tapped deep enough and the set screw couldn't get a good hold on the cable. Then when I thought I got that fixed, the pedal end of the cable broke. The ball on the end of the cable went right thru the plastic piece that holds it to the pedal. After that I finally got fed up with it and bought the Lokar cable. Hope you have better luck.
