Ok. I'm pretty sure I've got a heat soak problem on my '79 and I've looked through the search facility. It seems a mini-starter will solve this? My question is which one is the preferred specifically for the heat soak problem? I'm not running headers and cost is not a factor. I want the problem to go away.
Ok, the sprained foot happened after filling up the car on the way home. It didn't start right away and I figured it was the same old heat problem on the starter. Embarassed, I put the car in neutral, got out and started pushing with one hand on the wheel to move it away from the other cars in line behind me. The car got going pretty good and my left foot went under the rear wheel. Once stopped, I let things cool for about 10 minutes and then away I went. While I was waiting for it to cool down, the comment from the gas bar attendant was ... Run out of gas already? How's the foot? I don't want to go through this again so Need some tech advice. The foot aches like hell.
Mine is the GM started tha tis used on the crate 502 and many other applications. I don't have the GM part number but if you search on the GM parts website I'm sure you can find it.
Thanks everyone for your help. I've got the info on both now and am taking tomorrow afternoon off from work. I'll hobble over to the local GM parts supplier and pick one of these up.
Good luck with the foot. A friend of mine did something similar many years ago.
Ran out of gas and as the car was coming to a stop he got out to push. The car was moving faster than he thought & caught his foot under the tire & ripped him out of the car and ran him over.
He ended up in the hospital with a broken foot, dislocated hip, a lot of cuts and bruises, etc.
go down to the local parts house and tell them you want a starter off of a 2000 chevy truck or tahoe with a 5.3. this is the starter that I use on my BB 69 and eliminated heat soak and I have use the same kind of starter on many SBC camaros and such works every time. Also if you play it right you can get one with a lifetime waranty and never have to buy one again.
Please post what you do and how well it works. I've got the same problem, but haven't gotten around to finding an answer. Right now I just make sure that I only stop where I'll be staying long enuf for everything to cool down.

I do the same thing here!!
AFter I get my new shocks and spring installed a new high torque starter is next on the list!
And I thought I was the only one who had ever pushed there own car over there foot. Was push starting my 74 Camaro many years ago. Had some big wide a$$ 50's on the back and my right foot got cought under one of them. Fractured a bone.
thinking of replacing mine too. Is this a "mini-starter". can't tell how big it is by the pic. also, my starter has a staggered bolt pattern. this one doesn't appear to. does it and/or will it work on a staggered bolt pattern?

i just got a mini starter and ordered one for a 76 corvette and when i got it i noticed that it didnt have the staggered bolt pattern so i figured it was a mistake on summits part but when i pulled the engine and got to looking at the starter location i realized the block is drilled for both staggered and non staggered starters but you might want to take a look at yours just to make sure you have the same thing. BTW my block is the original matching numbersso it appears the the 76 is set up for both but im not sure about the other years.
Update on mini-starter..... Went to a few GM parts depots today (London area) and no one has this starter the one Paul67 recommended) in stock! They couldn't even provide a timeline when they could get one. That's crazy for a releatively common part that fits so many years. I'm going to try brianlewis60's suggestion and look at the wreckers tomorrow, otherwise I'll have to go online and locate one from the US. The proform sounds like it will also do the trick.
Update on foot .... bruised pretty good and xrays today showed nothing broken, so I was lucky. Been medicating it with beer.
For what it's worth Moroso makes a heat shield that works pretty well for me. It's an aluminum plate shield that fits around the starter and reflects exhaust heat away.
