A year ago I bought a 1969 small block vette. The engine was out of the car and in order to put it back in, i had to take out the transmission and install it on the engine. after that it went in fine. Recently i took the engine out again to paint it and change the flywheel. After putting in the engine again I figured it must be possible to the engine back in the car without taking out the tranny.
Any suggestions.
Also. Is it possible to take out the tranny brace and then disconnect the tranny from the engine and remove it withour removing the engine itself. In other words, is it possible to take out the tranny without removing the engine from the car?
All the help I have recieved so far has been good so i hope this will be too.
I've taken the trans out/in on my BB a couple times. The cross brace is welded in, so you must drop the rear of the engine down as much as possible (be careful of the dist.) after you remove the shifter and the trans from the bellhousing and sliding it back a bit. It is a tight fit but can be done. If you don't want to tear your trans. tunnel insulation remove it first. Helps to have a trans. jack or another set of arms. It's alot more fun putting it back in (you may want to brush up on your cursing first).
Ben, yes you can remove the transmission without removing the motor. It's tight, but you can do it. However, if you're planning on pulling it out on an annual basis, you might want to consider cutting the cross member as some have done so that it's removable - makes life a lot easier!
