Maybe I don't know the whole story, but I have a carb problem and I can't figure it out. Therefore maybe GrandSportC3 needed someone to fix the problem that he or she couldn't figure out.
so why pay somebody else to do what you coulda done yourself in less time for less money?
Because Oliver didn't know where the power valve was or how to check the condition...Norval and most of the board said power valve/needle and seat...hey, if you've never taken a carb appart, it's intimidating, so you take it to someone who knows.
Maybe a stupid question... You seem pretty sharp...so why pay somebody else to do what you coulda done yourself in less time for less money?
no time... I had to work late and had lots of other things to do.. Will be early in the morning at the track to see if the car is going to run any better.. At least it's not flooding anymore after they changed out all the stuff..
I also cannot test a power valve myself.. I have the old valves which were bad, but they don't look bad. They have a device to test them.. I don't have that etc.... I'm mostly a parts changer.. I can swap out every bolt on on my car (including engine, tranny, rear end etc.etc. but I'm not too confident working on internals... I've worked on my old carb and f'd up some threads in it.. Those threads are awfully soft and the mess up potential is big...

And now, you know the rest of the story.....
Well, I have taken the carb apart before for changing jets. The 3rd time that I did it, I f'd up the threads...
Oliver, everybody, man, woman, child, has the equipment to test a power valve....yo lips....all ya gotta do is suck on the sucker and if the valve pops back out...it's worthless....

Well, there are different power valve ratings... Let''s say the power valve is supposed to open when the vacuum drops to 2.5 but it opens at 5...
How are you going to test it with your lips?? You must have sensible lips then...
Well - the truth is that I've never dealt with power valves and didn't want to take my chances in f'n something up on a $750 carb... If it would be a cheapo $200 carb, I might've tried it myself
Talked to a guy at the local cruise night... and he told me that he blocked off the power valves on his carb (Dominator) and went up 2 sizes in jets and got a nice performance improvement at the track... I might do that too...
