Hi everyone, started to detail out my console shifter plate this weekend and found out that it was not attached to anything, appears mounting tabs are no longer there. Any input on the mounting repair kits that are offered? Easy or hard to fix? can it be fixed without removing the whole console?
Thank You
Repair the one you have. I just installed a brand new one and broke 2 tabs installing it.
You don't need to remove the console. Replacing a console is one of the hardest jobs in a Vette IMHO.
You need to spread the force around so that when you screw on the console plate you are not yanking on a tiny piece of plastic. I riveted some steel brackets behind the plastic tabs (or in one case where it was) so that the screw would be pulling against a larger area. I also made sure that part of the steel bracket rested under the lip of the console so that when the screws pulled up it was against a a wider area.
Go to a hardware store and buy some L shaped brackets or a __ joiner piece. Looks like a small piece of steel with four holes in it. They are about $2 for a packet of 4-6. Drill holes to 1/8" and use 1/8" rivets with a BACKER WASHER (washer with 1/8" hole) to support the bracket.
You can use glue to put the tabs on but as soon as you put pressure on it they will break off again.
I bought the console repair kit (Eckler's, or ZIP, I can't recall which) specifically for this problem in my '68. Worked like a charm. The repair kit DOES require the console to be removed.
