Default Tilt/Tele in a 68

Im looking at a 68 convertible and was just wondering if a tilt/tele column from a 69-72 will work in a 68? The car currently does not have it since from Ive been told it wasnt available in 68 but really want to add it. Also as a side note is adding PB as simple as it would seem? Car also does not have PB and want to add this.

Thanks
Chris

I don't see why not....only thing you will have to do is keep explaining to your passangers why you have two ignition switches.

If you're handy with the wrench, it's as simple as buying parts and putting them on....don't forget the PB master cyl internals are different

Yes a later model tilt column will work and upgrading to PB isn't that bad of a job. Looking to add a tilt column to mine.

Yes, it will fit but I thought Flaming River had a tilt for 67-68 available now?

p/s is not too hard to add. If I was going to do it again I would get the box style from Corvette Steering instead of the factory ram style.

The 1969 and later T&T locking columns will not just bolt-into the 1968 Vette. The vertical mounting holes in the later column bracket will not match up to the mounting bolts in the older car. The steering column tube on the later column is larger in diameter than the 1968 column. I am not sure it would pass through the instrument panel.

Hmmmm . . so what does everyone recommend for someone who has a 68 and wants to put a tilt/tele or at the very least a tilt in it? Dont buy a 68? Really prefer to have a tilt/tele. Is there really a problem with the 68s and should I look for a different year??

Thanks for the info Jim, I see your a fellow Michigander huh! Im down South from you about 30 minutes up I75 from Motown.

Colorado, I looked at a 70 with a mid 70s tilt and it looked terrible. The column is much bigger around and the lower column shroud does not bolt up properly to the dash.

I bought a '68 not knowing about the headaches of trying to convert to a tilt/tele...if it's an important option for you, consider looking for '69 and up. I love my '68, but all the quirks and one-year-only goodies can drive you crazy.

The flaming river option I've looked at, but cost is in excess of $800, and the column had no collapse-on-impact mechanism, which some have felt is a significant safety issue (personally, if my shoulderbelt [also a mod, was not present in the original '68] fails in a crash, I figure I'm screwed anyway!). Someone named Pinky(?) here on the forum has made custom adaptations of later columns for the '68 for big $$$...

If having a tilt/tele is very important to you, don't buy a 68.

Nothing wrong with '68s. I've been in love with mine for 21 years, now.

Telescopic steering was an option for '68; there was no tilt. You can occasionally find a '68 tele column, but they're rare and carry a large price tag when you find one. Any '69 up T/T column will come with an ignition switch you don't want/need for a '68.

A company called Ididit now makes a tilt steering column for the 68. I ordered mine a few weeks back and it is to be delivered sometime next week.

I know what you mean about having a tilt wheel.

Yes it will. See www.corvettefaq.com for more details. You have headlight hi/lo built in there and it is shorter than a 69-76. 77 is a 1-year only lever. you might sell the 77 column to somebody who needs one and get one for a 78-82 or even a 69-76. Somebody asked a question earlier today about a broken 77 lever. Maybe you can get together....

I actually have a '76 tilt&tele column in my '68 with parts from '69, '78 and '80
When I bought the car, it already had the '76 column with the fugly Vega style steering wheel with integrated hub. So I got all the parts necessary to install a nicer steering wheel off Ebay. Those parts happen to be from different years, but worked great....

Colorado 1967,
The 1977 steering column will bolt right into your 1969 Vette.

However, 1978 through 1982 columns have to have their shrouds shortened in order for those years to bolt in.

This is a link to the paper on installing dimmer columns in early Vettes.

I'd like to see a picture of that setup, as well as a list of parts and description of how it was done!

...would I need a dremel?

Grincha,
The steering column/wheel looks like any other column...

The column is a '76, the hub and all the small parts needed are from '78, the ring for the telescopic part is from a '80 and the horn button with emblem is from a '69 and the steering wheel is the 80 - 80 style..
