Having challenge developing alternative method for getting my newly purchased 69 with side pipes on jack stands, floor jack won't slide under. Currently driving onto ramps and then using blocks on floor jack to avoid hitting pipes to reach the frame.
I usually get unter the rear end.. I use a plate and a towel and get right under the bolts that hold the strut bracket in place. I can jack and get two stands unter the rear corners of the frame. The, I slide the jack under the front cross member with a peice of 4x4 and two peices of 2x4 and catch it on either side lower control arm brackets. Even after setting on stands, its hard to SLIDE under the pipes!!!
As mentioned above, I think jacking from the middle of the front main crossmember or at a point under the differential are two convenient starting places.
To jack from the side rails of the frame, I've first started by using the factory jack. You can get it under the side rails. Just push it underneath the car, from behind the front wheels, or in front of the rear wheels. Slide the jack to where you want it on the side rail. Manually use the factory jack to begin to elevate the car. I don't use the factory jack handle, I use a normal ratchet wrench with an extention and socket. Soon, you can lift the frame up high enough that you can get the floor jack under the sidepipes, and make contact with the frame siderails. Up you go.
