How do you replace the carpet on the storage compartments on a 76? It seems to have some sort of frame that wraps around and over the top. The frame seems to be put on with some type of stud that is melted and smoothed. How do you get it apart and how do you put it back togather again ?
Any help would be appreciated.

Reason: spelling
I just did this several months ago. Mine was pretty broken up when I started so I didn't have to worry about being too careful. I drilled out the stud things and took off the surround. Painted the pieces. I then had to scrape the old carpet off of the old lid and cut the new pieces to fit. Glued those on with spray adhesive. I then applied epoxy to the surround and put it back on and held it with quick clamps. Again, mine was in pieces so there were some gaps between pieces. I filled the gaps with Bondo and also the drilled out holes were filled with Bondo. Painted the Bondo'd stuff again. Voila, good as new.
All of the Corvette parts places sell replacement trim pieces to go back on around the carpet. About $25 for the 3 piece set. They fit pretty good, nice and snug. Fasten em on with small screws. I've found it impossible to remove the originals in salvageable condition. Can get em painted or paint em your self.

I tried to pick all of the old trim plastic out of the original doors when I did my first set. I built a nice jig to hold the door still so I wouldn't hurt me or the door that I really wanted to save. When the door slipped out of the jig I jabbed the pick into the big vein on the side of my thumb and then looked like a Monthy Python skit from all the blood shooting out. Blood was all over me and the garage. After I got it stopped I called Dewitt's and bought the whole assembly. When I did the next car I didn't even take the old doors apart.
Call Dewitt's, he's a supporting vendor!!! It sure saves the blood.
I have a 76 and my frames were brittle. The first one broke while trying to take it apart. I ended up replacing the whole assembly like Texas did. It fit great!
A little trick for doing this is to take a pair of scissors and clip the carpet nap down close to the bonding layer around the edges about as wide as the top lip of the trim.
It makes the trim assembly sit tigher to the frame and it looks better when done.
