I recently installed 3.73 ring and pinion gears in my 81 and am wondering if anyone knows where i can find a speedo gear that will read close to normal. now it says im going about 25% faster than actual.
I got a few from Zip products for my Muncie a few years ago. I just looked and they have them for automatics also. Just call them with your application and they should be able to get you the right gear.
I did the same thing, I put the 15 tooth drive gear and 41 tooth driven gear with 255/60/15 27.1" OD tires in a 700R4 tranny, its pretty good on speed. I got mine over the net from Bowtie Overdrives. You can go to chevytalk.com and find a program that will calculate your gear needs. Good Luck!
Divide old rear ratio into new ratio and multiply that by the teeth on your existing driven speedo gear and that will tell you what the new gear needs to be.
when i was running the th 400 and the 373 gears my speedo was off, the way i corrected it was,,had my friend in his 95 drive along side me on the highway, we had push to talk nextels (from work)-he held his vette at steady 60 mph,, mine was off 5-7mph... each tooth( of the gear that you need to change on the side of the trans) is about 3 -4 mph ,,i got a new plastic gear from the general 2 teeth different and it worked,,we ran down the highway again and they we as close as we were gonna get it------when i changed the trans to the 700r-4 ,,i told the trans shop that i had 373 rear gears,,and they set up the speedo gear in the trans correctly
