I just got a stock 75 that is going to need exhaust work. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what type of setup to use. I am currently thinking about a set of hooker headers because they make a true dual exhast pipe kit. Have not decided on mufflers yet, leaning towards dynomax. I plan keeping the care mainly stock for now. any ideas would be helpfull, thanks in advance.
We ran Dynomax headers, 2.5 pipe and flowmasters on my sons 75. Shops wanted $1,000 to bend the offset pipes and offsets for the mufflers, kits weren't available for C3's. We made our own offsets from mandrel bent el's using a chop saw and MIG. Took a day to get it all fab'd up but works great and the mufflers don't hang down as I see on some cars.
After reading many topics about headers etc. I may just stick with stock exhaust manifolds. I found a company called ric's corvettes that makes a dual exhaust kit. I may just go that route. I do not have the know how or the $$$ to do things right.
The ram's horns stock exhaust manifolds are not all that bad. It was the really, really crappy catalytic converter in '75 (first year for it) that gummed things up so badly. They improved on that item in short order...

Thanks Chris
Just get any 74 dual exhaust system, it'll be a direct bolt-on. The L82 system expands to 2.5" and is made for 2" manifolds. You can price-shop if you are on a budget through any of the vendors. Allens exhaust makes a high quality system that fits. Joe
I wish that I didn't put stock exhaust on my 75, but money was tight and seemed like the right thing to do at the time. Where I live I do get EPA tested so a CAT is required. The new high performance cats are straight though and really won't kill your horsepower, so now I'm planning to get one more CAT and convert to true duals. A local muffler shop said cost will be around $400.00, using my mufflers and tailpipes. Another thing to consider is the heat shield for over the CAT. I fabricated one from 16 gauge stainless steel, now I'll need to fabricate another. Seems the heat shields are completely non-existant from any after market supplier I have tried.
If you get some heavy card stock paper or cardboard you can fit and trim it to fit like the shield would, then use it as a pattern to fabricate a shield. I'm fortunate in that I have a sheet metal shop where I work, but any local heating and cooling shop in your area should be able to fabricate one for you using your template.

My 75 has a slightly modified engine, (higher compression, cam, etc.). The exhaust consists of 62-65 Rams Horns which are 2-1/2", and 2.5" pipes all the way back. This is basically a 68-74 exhaust with bigger manifolds. I'm not sure the 2.5" manifolds really give you that much more flow over the 2" stock ones, but they certainly look like they would. Chevy went with the 2" on the SHP small blocks after 65 without apparent problems.
I have no smog inspections to deal with in my area, but if I ever do I would install a high flow cat on each side. You can say what you want about 75's poor performance, but in current tune mine will outrun my 67 327/350. The exhaust system is the first thing that needs attention on a stock 75.

I switched from 2" manifolds into 2.5" pipes to 2.5" manifolds with 2.5" pipes and re-using the same mufflers the exhaust sounds more open and free flowing. I like it a lot. Joe
My '75 has had a "1974 style" stainless true dual exhaust from Allen's Stainless Exhaust since 1991. It's just as perfect as the day it was installed except for a little tarnishing of the stainless, but otherwise it's great, especially when I have to take it apart for whatever reason. No rust, loosen the clamps and it pulls apart. I also retained my stock exhaust manifolds.
Thanks for all the advice.
I am gonna go with the L82 system with magnaflow mufflers. Cant wait to get them on the car. I wonder how much horsepower increase I will get after removing stock exhaust.
