the steering wheel on my 80 has a bit of play in it. i can move the wheel up and down about a 1/4 '' does anyone know how to fix the problem ? is it a bearing or packing problem.thanks
There is an aluminum housing at the top of the column. Either the screws that hold it are loose or the housing is broken. You will have to remove the upper end of the assembly in order to tell. Hopefully you can just tighten the screws.

Been there , Go to corvettefaq.com and read Jim Shea's papers.
I think that every GM column ever made needs to be torn down & reassembled about every 10 to 15 years. It's not hard, but it's tedious. Have a LOOONG work space where you can lay everything out in order of removal and have a bottle of loctite ready for the reassembly. Things are nuch simpler if you take the column out of the car. Removing the column sounds extreme, but in the long run, you'll have a LOT less work involved than you will if you try to work on it while it's still in the car.
