Default Ideas on Low Air Cleaner

I'm putting on a high rise intake manifold and have only 1 1/4" height available for an air cleaner. Since I don't want to go with a new hood, is there a commercially available air cleaner that will fit this space and not be restrictive? On the other hand, any suggestions about getting one custom made if I have to go that route?

Air Cleaner filter and/or housing clearance is and has always been a problem with our C-3's. I wondered the other day about using an aluminum cap from a blow through turbo kit to place over the carb and use a remote K&N cone air filter or even air filters. The caps are usually quite short in height for clearance issues with turbo installations.

I know this may seem a little off the wall but even GM uses this type application on later model Corvettes. Nothing says the air filter has to be in direct proximity of the carb to filter air. jim

Very good idea but I haven't seen any such item commercially available. Anyone know if there's a vendor with a remote air cleaner for C3's?

Holley and Berry Grant make a couple of short air clearners you might be interested in. Not sure of hieght though....better check with the companies on that one.

I have the holly air cleaner and it doesn't fit on my stock hood with a performer intake and quadrajet carb. It sticks out to far to the sides and doesnt sink down any.

Got mine from Big B Auto on e-bay. 14x3, but I wound up getting a 2" element. Was inexpensive.

Performer RPM. Air cleaner is a 2" drop base. I have a Carter carb and used the edelbrock gas line kit which drops it straight down. I have read that a banjo fitting will work also. It does hit on the choke just a little but not enough to notice.

Dean,
I really like this! can you tell me more about how you made this?

I use the Edelbrock proformer 600 cfm carb and would like to lower the air cleaner but the choke and throttle brackets obstruct it. your triangle air filter looks great and would give me the space to clear the obstructions,

better yet can you make another? I think you may have a great product on your hands.

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks,
John

I bought the Air cleaner from Summit last year and cut out the base with a saw then filled the space with sheet metal. I was careful not to mess up the chrome edge on the base so when it is on you can't see that it was lowered. There is plenty of air coming in to feed my 600 cfm carb. I hope these pictures help you, the emblem is for the gas door from the 81, I used silicone on the screws so they wont come off into the carb.

That is very cool! I guess when I thought of a drop base air cleaner I over complicated the whole thing. I think I might try to make one of these myself!
