I had all the lens' out for a repaint and put it all back together. I did notice that the drivers side brake light works when the light switch is off. (as in daytime driving). When I turn on the lights and apply the brake only the pass side brightens and the drv's side goes out. everything else works otherwise?

check out your grounds.....since these are dual filament bulbs and they share a common ground sometimes when the ground is bad the electricty will find its way to ground back through a filament ...however when juice is going to both filaments with no ground nothing happens
You have some combination of bad grounds in your system. Run a temporary parallel ground to confirm that this is the problem and then ground thoroughly - fix existing or run permanent parallel grounds.
So it sounds like a ground problem? I will look at this tommorow if I have a chance. It is funny that the test light will illuminate when touching the contacts. I removed the bulb & I pulled the 3rd wire that plugs into the side of the socket. I attached the alligator clip to that wire and the pointed end to the contacts inside the bulb socket. The test light will illumunate to each contact???
Fixed It! Yes guys it was a combonation of the ground wire not making contact within the socket. I bypassed it with another ground & bingo.
I was able to save the old socket by inserting a small screwdriver into the ground wire side of the socket and pryed back the contact blade enough for it to work again. taped it up for good measure and all seems fine. Thanks again for this great forum & the smart people who contribute to it
