Default 1980 door handle fix

The door handle on the drivers side of my '80 doesn't stay up... it sits down in the well. It still works but doesn't look good.

I bought a "quick fix" spring (Ecklers) that is supposed to fix the problem in minutes. It's just a little piece of thin metal.

The directions in the package were baseically a photo copy. They were too hard to read, and I can't understand how to put this spring under the door handle.

I know it's a simplistic question, but has anyone done this? Can you explain what I'm supposed to do? thanks.

It's very easy to put in and also very easy to snap if you fold it completely.
While holding the handle flap in the fully down position, take the ends of the handle spring and compress toward each other enough to start the spring ends into the handle. Push the spring at the top bend downward until it bottoms over the old spring. Release the handle flap and the spring is installed. Lubricate every 60 days or when no visual oil is around the spring.

Keep it well lubricated or you will be replacing it sooner than you may want to.
Don't ASK me how I know this.

For a little more effort, you can replace the broken spring in
the handle.

I bought an old handle (chrome quality doesn't matter if your handle is good) and cut off the end of the rod that holds the
spring and top half of the handle together. Take out the rod
and the spring. Take your handle off your door (easier said
than done - its a tight space...) and replace the broken spring
with your new spring.

Or get a new handle and replace your old one...

Be careful with that spring.
I had the same problem. I could not figure out how to install the clip and managed to get all of it into the door handle. Then the door would not open becuase the clip was inside of the handle, and not acting like a spring.

I think that the clip is supposed to go around the spring. It would help if there was directions.

By the time I got mine out it was broken, so I wasted the $6 and 3 hours taking off the door panels, and door handle to get the spring out.
I could then fix the door handle spring correctly. What I did was bend the spring at the end that was broken so it would catch the pivot handle. Works like new.
