Take a look and make sure your rag joint is good. If so try and adjust the play out at the steering box. Just a couple of things to try before you spend some funds.

Bob I fully understand but for me I do not know what I would do if my steering had no slop lol.

One further note though there is Gary here on the forums that does rebuild the stock gear boxes better than new.

i think if i had a mechanical heart i'd let Gary rebuild it. i have just gotten use to new technology steering and am not willing to go back, although even my 1950s and 60s english sports cars steered better

Have you adjusted the "lash" in the gear box? That can make a difference if all else is OK.

I did the rag joint, then adjusted the steering lash, and it still had too much slop (scary on the rutted highways here in WA). I finally broke down and rebuilt the entire suspension ball joints, tie rods, etc and installed new springs front and rear. Took about 16 hours total on a lift. Then I took it to the alignment shop and had them set the specs the way I wanted them. The car is unbelievable after the rebuild. It has no slop, basically pivots around corners and rides very well without the creaks and pops from the 34 year old suspension. Do yourself a favor, if you want to really drive the car and not be afraid of it, spend the cash and rebuild the front end. Probably cost me $900 in parts (from VB&P and Mid America) and $50 for an alignment. I'm sorry I didn't get to it earlier.

My '81 has a loose, vague speed when rounding curves at speeds over 50 mph. The car has only 34k miles. From the day it was purchased new, it has always had a vague feel. I assumed it was a design issue. I'm going to check my rag joint tonight.
