i'm using a 1/2" phenolic spacer and heat shield with the speed demon...have not done any experimenting with it, but i'm happy with how it runs....in fact i wasn't far from you today with the vette i just kept heading south after i dropped one of the kids at school....
I've seen many dyno runs with spacers.. and on big cammed engines, the spacers can make a huge difference.... I've seen 25+ HP difference with 1 - 2 inch spacers... However, the RPM range will shift and you might actually looks power and torque at lower RPM but will gain at higher RPM...
Yes, actually. I have tested the following spacers at the drag strip:
1/2" 4 hole phenolic spacer
1/2" open phenolic spacer
1" open spacer
2" open spacer
2" four hole spacer
2" High Velocity Heads (HVH) Super Sucker spacer
The 1/2" 4 hole spacer is what I use on the street as it made tuning the idle circuit on the Mighty Demon easier (BG suggests this). It also made off idle and part throttle response cripser.
I have run all my best ET's and MPH with the HVH spacer, they say its good for .1s and 2mph, and I would have to agree with that. I have seen the same spacer pick up .1s on a 9 second car, so they do work.
The 2" four hole spacer also worked well with my motor, results will vary so the best option is to try it out and see...

Hi Bob,
Well I"ve got the day off tomorrow and myself and about fifteen other guys and their cars have rented Atco for the day so I'm really loking forward to a good test and tune day there. I also have a 1/2" phenolic spacer and removed it to check the slots on the Demon. The gaskets really get stuck on the spacer, had to scrape them off and install new ones. I'm thinking of changing manifolds and going to an air gap for better cooling, eliminating the spacer which might give me more room for a larger K&N element say 14" x 4".....your thoughts?

whats ATCO and where is it?
those air gaps look cool, not sure if it will eliminate the need for some sort of heat barrier, i'm always amazed at how hot everything gets in the engine compartment and still continues to work properly..

Thanks Vetdrms for that info, I'm using the Speed Demon on a high rise manifold (Winters OEM) with a 1/2" open spacer, the low end is fine but seems to die out towards the end of 1/4 mile, just wondering if an Air Gap manifold might be a good choice, the four hole spacer sounds interesting...

Atco is Southwest from me about an hour, out Rte 70 to Rte 206 South into Tabernacle then another 10-15 minutes from there, since I removed the license plate and put the OEM front center grill in the temp has gone down, not that I had a cooling problem, but that plate blocks alot of air to the engine....

thks... you know i don't have heating/cooling problem and i do not have that "pan/shield/valance" under the front of the car...wonder if that makes a difference either way?

Bob, I've heard many guys say the valance/small spoiler directs air into the engine compartment and stabilizes the front end......

one more thing to buy....maybe i should custom make one that looks like something out of "deathrace 2000"....remember that fine piece of cinematography

Fine indeed...just add spikes....was that David Caradeen (spelling)..
Spacer are used to fix a problem between the carb and intake. They are slightly mismatched so we add a spacer. If the carb is too small and the plenum too shallow the air/fuel mixture hits the floor causing fuel seperation. A spacer in this case raised the carb giving the mixture more chance to make the turn into the intake runners.
A oversize carb has a lower velocity so it is not bothered by fuel seperation or hitting the plenum floor.
I have seen dyno results where adding a spacer took away torque and power.
It is hard without a dyno to test spacer. Well maybe back to back runs at the track but seat of the pance can be deceiving.
I have a spacer I would like to try (I think it is 1/2" 4hole) but I have almost no hood clearance as is and I am afraid hood will hit if I add the spacer.
