After the long winter I started up the vette and noticed antifreeze leaking under the rad. For about two weeks it leaked in small amounts where ever I stopped and now it does not leak at all. I have kept an eye on the reservoir and needs about a 1/2 a quart of antifreeze every 500 miles. I have checked the engine oil (dipstick) and can not see anything unusual, looks normal and not filling up . My question is where is it going.
There are two things that I would check. The water pump weep hole under the front shaft bearing. They sometimes leak when the engine is running but not when it is stopped. Another possibility is the radiator has a leak under heat and pressure while it is running, but quits when it cools down.
have you checked the radiator and made sure it is full of coolant. some times the catch tank does not refill the radiator and the coolant might be low. that would explain why you have not seen any leaks for a while.
the best thing is to make sure every thing is full and look over for leak. then drive it and get it hot and check for leaks. hope you find the leak on the outside of the cooling system if not you may have a interinal leak in the engine. but it sounds like it is probaly on the outside.
Remove the Radiator Cap & make sure it's full!!!
the level in the reservoir might be missleading if you have a leak!!!
with the engine cooled off feel the bottom of the waterpump, if your fingers get wet you found the leak!
"it leaked in small amounts where ever I stopped and now it does not leak at all."
First of all,is it/or was it leaking forward of the water pump ? Sometimes a small leak can collect on the support under the bottom of the radiator, then spill over when parked.
