Exactly same FUN job!!! 
I have changed quite a few and there is no easier way that I have found. It is not really a hard job, it is just that you start to feel that the heater core was part #1 of the 10,000 parts used to build the car. VERY time consuming.
Make sure you buy ALL new seals for the heater box and ducts. Dr. Rebuild sells a nice kit with all the necessary stuff.
