Default Should The Spider Gears Be Smooth.

Ive got a rebuilt diff here and i just noticed that the spider gears in it have litle ruts or hairline indentations on the teeth i can catch them with my fingernail. is this normal? my ring is smooth why arent the spider gears.

Maybe they have new spider gears in the posi housing which still have the feed (manufacturing) marks on them if they were cut from steel and not forged. The ring gear is probably "worn in" which helped to smooth the finish your seeing on it's teeth.

There should be no burrs on the teeth. I radius the edges before installing new or used spiders. Can you post a picture of what you're referring to?

I have done many differentials and it is not uncommon to see small lines on the spider gears from being cut/forged or however they mak them. you should run a 17-10 gear tooth count if you are doing any performance work with your Vette as the 18-10 spiders are weaker and tend to fail more often than the 17-10 set. Tom's differentials is a good refrence on Vette differentials. Tom is quite a "dude" to talk to about Vette rear ends.
