Default carb replacement

my stock carb has rough idle and probably needs rebuilding. it is electronic controled (1981) I was thinking of replacing it with a holley 650 dual feed. the car came with nitrous installed. it has a spacer under the carb with fuel and nitrous jets. is this enough carb? later I want a mild cam and headers. thanks

If the carb is "electronically controlled" it is the E4MC and a Q-Jet. Changing to a Holley is not that easy. The intake would need to go along with a pile of emission controls and sensors. I would seriously rebuild the one you have if that is the problem. Before condeming it, how about a tune up and checking for vacuum leaks. That is the first step in rough idle. If you find that is the problem and the carb is a problem and you do not want to rebuild it yourself - check out

- Recarbo

Both are on the net.
Good luck.

The April 2005 issue of "Corvette Enthusiast" has an article written by Tom Shaw that gives good info on rebuilding the Q-Jet. He also gives references of good rebuilders.

My wife read the article and then bought the book "Rochester Carburetors" by Doug Roe. She used both and rebuilt the carb on her 75 Conv. She said it was relatively easy but said she learned quickly to read ahead before assembly. She got the job done in two days and it looked good to me.

She's not mechanically inclined but wants to do everything she can to expedite the rebuild of the car. I say if she can do it then so can most. Give it a try. The worst thing that can happen is you will have to have it redone. Only costing you your time and the cost of the rebuild kit ($25-30) if it doesn't work. Good Luck!

i have no problem rebuilding it I am auto tech by trade, I am eventually going to remove all the emission controls. we are not tested in Louisiana.
I have only worked on fords for the last 29 years and am new to chevys.
I just thought I might be able to replace it with a non computer controlled
carb,

If you replaced the carb with a non-computer unit, you'll also have to replace the distributor with a stock non-computer HEI unit. Also, the tranny 3rd gear lockup may not work.

Worst of all, the Check Engine light will come on

Go for it. A Holley 650 will be fine. But scrap the NOS before you blow up your engine...
