Fixed Loose Rearview Mirror
I tried replacing the metal 'u' clip; NO IMPROVEMENT.
While paging through my Dr Rebuild catalog, I happened upon a 4-piece kit that included the mounting plate, the 'ball' arm, 'u' clip and the screw that fastens the clip to the mounting plate; Approx $50. I ordered the vinyl cover for the assembly as mine was not going to stay put.
Installed it all today and the mirror now stays put. My impression is that the mounting plate gets worn by the mirror ball arm over time and the clip is no longer able to keep the arm in place. Just to be sure, I went ahead and bought the kit in event the ball was also worn. The old parts are going into my '69 Take-offs' box...
Now, it's saf(er) to drive!
Next repairs on the list for the L46:
tach needle and dashboard bulbs, lube tach and speedo cables
stainless exhaust system (due this week)
power steering conversion
drain/fill the 4-speed lubricant
drive shaft u-joint replacement
battery cables replacement
drain/fill differential
When you call the order line, have your credit card (Visa or Mastercard ONLY), the part number and description ready as they don't waste time.
The number to call with your ORDER (no part inquiries on this line): 800-866-9362. Be sure to ask for their most recent catalog. It will be free with your order. Since your order total will be over $50 it is well over the minimum order amount of $20. IF you choose to get the catalog first, visit the website and request the catalog or call the (203) 366-1332 number and pay the refundable fee for the catalog; don't call the 800 number.
NOTE: There was some rust on the one screw that held my old bracket to the window frame. I chose to drill it out and just replace the two side screws. ALSO, be patient with the screws that attach the vinyl window frame covering to the window frame; they may be rust-seized and the threads may nearly be gone (ask me why I know).
Best of luck!
