Just wondering if anyone has a cold air intake setup on their C3 .. I have a 1968 454 BB, and I know it gets hot at times.
I read online from corvettefaq.com that Even if you have your heater off, hot water Still pumps through the pipes .. Is that true? They have a walk through how to install a hot water shut off valve, to cool down the vette, but would also like to know if cold air intake would be benefitial ...
you get roughly 1% more HP for every 10 - 11 degree F drop in inlet temp....
so an estimate would be 220 air from the engine bay to 90 degree ambient is a 130 deg drop or about 10% more HP.... a 300 RWHP car would go to something like 330 RWHP
Beneficial to cool the engine compartment? Naw. The combustion process creates WAAY too many BTUs of heat for a little induction hole to make any difference in under hood temps.
Have it on my '68 BB, in fact myy BB almost runs too cool. I have a aluminum rad, electric fan and cold air intake. On the HWY I run no fan and temp are around 170degrees in traffic w/ fan the most it gets is 210-220degrees. If your car is running hot you may need to get the rad flushed and/or check your fan clutch.
For what it's worth L88 air chamber has shown a decrease in .2-.3 1/4 miles at the track by some members here.
I built myself a cold air setup about 2 years ago. I actualluy put a temperature sensor inside the air filter to measure air temperature..
On a 90 degree day, the intake air was 135 - 140 degrees in stop and go traffic and 95 - 100 degrees on the highway without the setup.
With the setup, the temperature stayed around 92 - 93 degrees the entire time. If you are racing, you'll get most benefits at launch, but little benefit as soon as the car gets moving unless the cold air system is also a ram air system..
I dont think a cold air would benefit because theres not much room to run the piping away from the motor. The temp. difference isnt that much to even worry about. Remember for every 11 degrees colder you gain a horsepower And A cold air setup doesnt make it that much colder
Mines similar to GrandSportC3's setup except mine is made of fiberglass. Fabricated my own setup so I could get it to fit under the stock hood, which I modified.
