How do I install a 1 inch wheel adapter on my car? It appears that my main bolts that the adapter would attach to are longer than an inch and they would stick out thus i would not be able to mount the rim to the adapter?
You may have to look at the backside of your new rims. On some rims there may be a small area cut out for the original studs and bolts to fit into.
Here is a shot of a wheel adapter that was deep enough for the lugs to fit all the way into. If yours are not this deep, then changing from the acorn style lugnuts to the open ended ones may give you the clearance you need.
With the few dealings I've had with adapters your assumption is correct. 1 1/4" depth is probably the minimum to be able to mount any aftermarket wheel. VBP sells some 3/4" adapters but they are for some type of corvette wheel only I think. If you need 1" you'll have to use a spacer and longer wheel studs.
Hello,
I put C5 rims on my C4. The C5 rims had a recess or pocket between each lug nut hole. So the extra amount of lug nuts that extended beyond the adapter fit into that hole.
I run VB&P 1 1/4" adaptors on the rear and ran into the same problem with the Weld Draglites. I had a local machine shop mill the adaptors a bit,and shave the lug nuts so the wheels would have a flat mounting face.
I just installed 1" wheel adpters on my 77 and they just covered the wheel studs. One thing to be carful about with these adpters is the stud thread, chevy switched from 7/16 - 20 to 12 x 1.5 mm in the early 80s and the through bore. I had to open the hole up on the adapters that I used on the front tires because they would not go over the bearing housing.
