Hey all,
I'm getting ready to patch up my exhaust where I cut it behind the tranny, and it appears that the 2 1/2 " pipe was flattened from that point all the way to the mufflers. Looking in the AIM it seems like that was stock. I assume that was done for clearance, so I guess my exhaust might be original.
So my question is should I have that done now ?, It would seem like the inside flow area of the pipe is the same when it is flattened, but all of the pictures of everyones new exhaust systems are not done that way. Why?
The problem is that no of the IDIOTS! making systems now flatten the pipes when they pass under the differential like the factory did. My 54K mile "survivor" LT-1 had the best muffler tone of any Chevy I have owned since my 69 302 Z/28 with a "deep tone" muffler yet, if you try to buy a "original exhaust" you don't get the correct mufflers. Corvette Central is one of the few that is making systems where the mufflers are welded onto the rear pipe for a "correct" factory appearance (screw the originality and go with an aluminized replacement system.)
I guess my pipes are orig then, but they are really bad with a couple holes where they turn to go into mufflers (Flowmaster 40's).
Im going to get some Dynomax ultra Flows for the new pipes, because you can't hear inside the car and my wife complained that they rattled the windows in the house.
I don't think new pipes with the droanmasters will make much difference.
From: Who says "Nothing is impossible" ? I've been doing nothing for years.
Any time you flatten or even bend the pipe with out mandrel bending the pipe will lose some of it's diameter, I got the mandrel bent 3 inch pipes because I didn't want to lose any flow. I still have plenty of ground clearance
Don't get the DroneMasters you will be sorry I am replacing mine with Super Turbos this weekend
You are correct. Pipes flattened into a D shape were stock and done for clearance purposes. It's not likely a muffler shop (or previous owner) went to the trouble of flattening a set of replacement tubes, so your pair are probably original. I'm still running the original D pair on my '68. They show their age, but they're still under there.
