Default 81 computer removal

I know the computer is under the drivers seat. But what is the right way to go about disconnecting it. (just unplug all the wires going into it ???/) Now if I have unplugged all the wires under the hood changed out carb to non computer and went non computer dist. Question is if the computer is still hooked up under the seat is there a signal going to the distributer to try and tell it what to do??? Thanks Randy

YOU MUST GET A NEW DISTRIBUTOR AND CARB......Both of the old are dependent on the computer. Just leave the computer in, and unhook as little as possible at first. After you get her back running, start elimating stuff a little at a time, just be dang sure you know what it is first. Many of the sensors and vac hoses can be deleted, just be careful.

Randy, why did you plug the puter back to the distrib.? No reason to other than for power. I clipped the ignition wire running to the old distrib. and the power wire and ran them directly to the new coil. Plugged the distrib. up to new coil, and bingo.....Get shed of that puter totally.....

Edit: I'm now assuming you have a true HEI with coil in the distrib.? Not sure how to handle that one. I am running an MSD ready to run distrib. with separate coil.

Yes it is a true HEI dist. all it has is the plug on the one side and I thought you use the old plug and just plug it back in. What next??? I was told today that as long as the computer still has power it will try to adjust the timing... Is this true....

I'm not sure. I was under the impression that you had to go with a setup like I am using with the seperate coil. Maybe someone else will jump in here, but I wouldn't run it through the puter........

Older style HEIs have no idea what a computer is. They use a vacuume to advance the timing. I'm going to be going through this same process in a week or so. What kind of carb did you get?

650? What kind of choke? Only ones I know with that low CFM are divorced. All of the electric choke q-jets are 750 or 795cfm.

It look like good build quality? Got a link or phone number to the company? I still haven't outright decided on where I'm going to order my new q-jet yet.

As far as I can see there's only a pink(switch) and white(tach) wire that are needed. The other wires(BLK/TAN/PPL/WHT) all run to the computer and are not used by anything else. I wouldn't think a new HEI dist. would have that connector on it.
