The first time I try and start is from cold it takes about 20-30 turns of the engine and a good squeeze of gas to get her started. Once started she runs perfectly and even if I shut her down immediately and restart she starts first turn of the engine.
I have a feeling it's a problem with the carb, anyone else have an opinion?
That is THE most common problem with the Rochester carb. Most develope this symptom sooner or later. The fix is to rebuild the carb and pay close attention to the plugged wells on the underside. They are leaking and causing the fuel to leak down overnight. Until you get it fixed use this starting proceedure. First thing, cold, before you do anything else is to hit the gas pedal quick and hard about 10 times. Then turn the key and start it. This usually will get enough gas in there to start and keep it running until the bowls fill up.
