This literally happened in a blink of an eye. I was coming back from the local 7-11, I was goosing it going up Mission Gorge Road, slightly over-reved the motor, slowed down to make a right turn and the engine died. I rolled to the stop sign and managed to start it. (Very hard starting) Got enough momentum to make it into my parking spot where it promptly died again. I once again got it started, after many pumps on the accelerator, but it won't idle. How does a carb go from working perfect to not wanting to hold an idle? Can anyone give me a starting point on what to look at to fix?
You "slightly over revved it". Just how much is "slightly"? What sort of motor are we talking about? New, old, stock, hot rod?
What I'm getting at is you may have "slightly" bent some valves or jumped a tooth on a worn timing gear set or blown a head gasket or bent some pusher rods or broken some valve springs.

Hope not, but it's possible.

Later.....
It's a 396, slight cam upgrade, roller rockers and I may have clipped 6grand. No biggie. I missed the shift from 2 to 3. It is definately carb-related. No funky noises. Thanks.
Mission Gorge Road ??? How does "Old 80" sound...near Lake Jennings ??? If you floated the valves,I would think you would have heard that......think dirt in carb for now....

Maybe it is a co-inkydink, but I filled her up the day before. Chevron too, but they may have gotten a delivery before I got there.
Had something similar happen to me. Turns out the tach drive gear broke and jammed the distributor main shaft. The distributor body turned so much the car died. Smoking gun was no tach operation when I cranked it over and over and over. Sure did flood it.

I use Chevron in the my Vette all the time....never had a problem but I change fuel filters yearly...I'm keeping fingers crossed that it is something simple:dirt, distributer.....
