Hey all, let me first introduce myself, I usually post on the C2 forum and lurk around on the C3 forum. Last week I purchased another vette, it's a unmolested 78. The paint is crappy but the car is sound. I noticed a couple problems with it so far, although minor, they bug the heck out of me. First is the fuel Guage, whenever you key the ignition the needle drives into the stops (Full) although I know there is less than a quarter of a tank of gas. Second is the clock, no function what so ever. What should I check first? How do I tell if my sending unit is working or if it is the guage? Is the broken clock a common occurance with vettes? Should I just replace it with a quartz clock? All other gauges work. My cooworker had me check continuity on the ribbon board on the back of the guage cluster and I found no "opens". Thanks
The clocks in the C-3 are prone to dust/debrie getting in them and then stopping. The little gears lock up. There are kits to rebuild them and replacement options as you mentioned.
I would check the ohm reading of the sending unit coming out of the tank first. It's easy to reach from the top. If it is stuck or needs rebuilding, you can easily pull them without removing the tank. Dr Rebuild is the only source for the gasket or you will have to cut your own. Maybe someone will chime in with the ohm range of the tank sending unit.
