The cam on my 82 finally went south, so I'm ready for a rebuild. I plan on pulling my motor and having it rebuilt professionally. I would like to put 350-400 hp motor back in. I would like to upgrade the crossfire intake. Should I do that? I did see a manafacturer on the internet selling a upgraded crossfire intake manifold that boast a 50 Hp increase, Or should I go with something else? The upgrade will have to remain California smog legal and somewhat simple and inexspensive to do, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
You'll probably get a lot of advice to rip off the x-fire and put a carb on, But you said CA emissons.....Ooooh...with visual inspection???. It is possible to make a crossfire (modified of course) make power, but the choice will be up to you.
Wander over to the crossfire forum and ask over there. They've been there and will be happy to help you out. Many of the 82 and 84 guys here are members.
I once read an article where they upgraded the '82 crossfire to a TPI setup. They had to shave a little under the hood to make it fit, but they did. They got some sort of kit that isn't made any more, though. You can probably fit an '85 TPI to it with little trouble.
Getting 350-400HP out of a crossfire and the word inexpensive don't go together
The cam, heads and intake are the areas that need work to get some power out of this engine.
Get into the Crossfire forum, you will get alot of info over there.
You can go with any newer system as long as you install all of the pieces and have everything working as required for smog. In the So Cal Thrid Gen F-body club I belong to we have a L98 Camaro with Vette aluminum heads and a Vette egr set up that has been dynoed at 330 hp and 391#/ft. torque. He is running a large base and runners with a ported plenum. We have other members running large base/large runner combinations or Super Rams and using Afr heads, 23 degree Trickflows, or Etecs in one case. All of those combinations make even more power. If you go with a tpi system, you have to take the car to a smog referree to have it certified before you can get it smogged. Do a 90-91 speed density L98 for two reasons. The speed density computer is better than the maf computer used in tpi systems, and you can run dual cats for more power. You didn't say what part of California you are from. If you can't find a used tpi for a good price anywhere else, take a look at thirdgen.org on the Southern California board in the sticky titled "Third Gen Friendly Companies" Thomas *** and Dave Staubli both buy running used Camaros and Firebirds to part out, and will have complete tpi systems available.
