Default New distributor install

Putting in new distributor just want to make sure I do it right. Engine has been turned with distributor out. What is the proper procedure for installation of HEI distributor?

I remove all the plugs except the #1,and turn over the engine with a ratchet on the crank pulley bolt. When the compression stroke comes around you'll feel it,and the balancer mark will be getting close to the timing tab.(Turning the crank clockwise).Set the timing mark at around 10 BTDC and then drop the distributer in so the rotor points to the #1 spark plug tower, with the #tower aligned so the distributer is fairly square with the engine.Check the firing order to be sure the plugs are wired right.
Done this many times, usually fires on the first turn of the key.

i think the most important thing that doesn't get mentioned much is the indexing of where you put it in so it slips and turns to where you want it to be.....mark it with blue tape measured back from the final spot you want it to be.... HEI is 2 1/4" back, points is 1.7", make sure you follow the valve cycle to be sure you are at TDC of the compression stroke, i would never "bump and start" with the starter so stuff "falls into place", i would only turn by hand .
