Default Hookers and angle plug heads...

Has anyone installed the Hooker headers & sidepipes with angle plug heads?? I know there were a couple of threads addressing the issue and everyone said they were going to try a few things, but I never saw any resolution. It's hard to believe that they didn't design the things to work with both angled and straight plug heads!! My 20 year old headers clear the things with inches to spare...

What happened to the Short plugs?
How about adding an exhaust manifold spacer?

Where are they interfering?
Stahls look good, but they are plain ugly cold steel for the price of chrome!

Another suggestions?

I have the Hooker side exhaust mounted to GM fast burn heads w/ angle plugs. No dinging of pipes to make them fit and I used the standard length spark plugs. No interference whatsoever.

Good news and interesting! - all their adds have footnotes "will not work with angle plug heads". I wonder why they say this then?

I used (until quite recently) Hooker competition side pipe headers (NOT available for years now) with Brodix heads and angle plugs and NEVER had any sort of problem. If you do a little homework you can find the correct plug that uses both a washer and a 5/8 hex socket or wrench versus a 13/16 socket spark plug.

PS: you could also bend over for Jere Stahl and then get them ceramic coated.

I had problems with my Vic Jr. heads and the sidepipe headers, one plug was hitting a pipe and another was very close. My heads have .3 inch raised exhaust ports so that didn't help. Problem here is that you need to find someone with the exact same heads because the spark plug angle and location is not the same from manufacturer to manufacturer. Another problem to is that Accel does not make a shorty plug to cross reference all plugs so the plug that the head manufacturer recommends might not be available in a shorty.

I had to cut and relocate one pipe on my brand new Hooker SC ( non sidepipe ) to get access to one plug as well as ding the pipes in about three different places to get them to fit, wish Hooker would just make them fit from the factory

No issues with Sportman II heads. Had to peen one tube with the AFR's (I think #4 that was about touching the sparkplug). The AFR's are also raised ports so the header tubes are raised to touching the bottom of the frame rails where they pass under.

Some headers designed for straight plug will accomodate angle plug heads. For example my Hedman #68280 are advertised for straight plug, but upon trying a set, I found they will accomodate angle plug heads with no problem.

I think there may be a smog qualification legal problem. I suspect that if a manufacturer can meet California Air Resources Board (for example) approval to put headers on a late 1968 (straight plug), they may not be able to legally sell them for a 1990's angle plug head equipped car. This is my guess as to why a manufacturer wouldn't be anxious to advertise all of the heads that their headers will really fit.

How can you tell if you have high port heads?

I just thought of another problem that affects me. I need to have an O2 sensor put in the collector. The Hooker collectors are behind the front wheel under the frame, while the Stahl collectors are in the engine compartment which is a plus.

Now I'm thinking Stahl headers + Hooker sidepipes...
