I just received my new high torque starter yesterday. I got my car on the ramps tonight to take a look and I found my existing stock starter seems to have a "staggered" bolt pattern. My new starter does not have a "staggered" bolt pattern. Will this new starter still work? I looked under there and I believe there is another bolt in the block that is threaded. Is this where the second bolt goes?
I figured changing a starter should be a synch, two wires and two bolts. I figured I would do a quick check before I started ripping and tearing and get
So I figure I'll do a quick check here and start back again tomorrow. It's supposed to rain anyway.
The GM starters have a single bolt pattern so they only fit the flyweel they were designed to fit.
That aftermarket starter looks like it has 2 patterns and no nose cone. It will probably fit either big or small flywheel as it looks like it was designed to work on one in-line set of holes but both flywheel diameters. The lack of a nose cone means it should work with either size bellhousing as well.

I just got it installed and it works good. I do have one question.
When the car fires up I get a little bit of a whine, I know it's because the starter is still engaged while the motor's flywheel is spinning (faster than the starter). I don't believe it's hurting anything, there is no grinding when it's turning over, just the whine when I get "fire in the hole!"
Should I be concerned or not.
It's going to be nice to get rid of the heat soak. I'm hoping I can stop the car now when it's hot and come back a few minutes later and get it to start.
Let me know what you guys think.
I'm headed back out to change the oil while it's up on my ramps.

mr first profrom ministarter sounded like the mechanical fire siren on an old fire trucking winding down......
i sent it back and the new one they gave me sounds similar but not to any of the same extent maybe, like 10% of that noise....not really noticable unless you specifically know what you are hearing.....i'm assuming it has to do with the gearing....now i don't even here it when i start the car....
so if its really noticable you should swap it for another one, if only you can hear it but its not noticable/annoying, i wouldn't worry about it.

That noise sounds like the reduction gears winding down after the engine fires. Probably nothing to worry about but what do I know? I never use those mini starters to fix heat soak.
I usualy put the Ford relay in the starter circuit and forget about the heat soak problem. Either fix works but the mini-starter is preferred by many people especialy by those that like to "upgrade" the GM supplied parts. I think the Ford solenoid solution is more common with us old farts that never had mini starters back in the day. Cheap, effective and I usualy have a few used ones in a box out in the garage from my dad's old Mustang.
I wouldn't worry too much about the whine if it sounds like it is "coasting down". Probably the engine catches it and speeds it up a bit before it can retract fully...
