Default What size harmonic balancer?

I'm about to order a degreed timing tape for my harmonic balancer. Does anyone know what size (diameter) balancer is on a stock 74 350? I tried to measure, but too much stuff in the way.

L-82 has the bigger 8" balancer. The L-48 has the 6-3/4" balancer. Hope that helps.

You can actualy do a pretty good job degreeing it using a tape measure but if you buy a timing tape, you still need to get it on the balancer. The timing tape will fly off and get destroyed rather quickly so once you get it on there, mark a few places with a sharpie in strategic places such as every 90 degrees and again at 36 degrees BTDC for setting the timing. That way you will have some reference that will stay on there. Just a thought.

Here's a trick to keep your timing tape, after installation, spread two thin films of edge sealer. I used 3m edge sealer.

Do you have a link to that procedure? I remember reading something from Lars, but don't remember where.

My motor is the L-48, but the balancer looks bigger than 6 3/4". Subsequent research in the mail-order catalogs indicate 8". If I measure the circumference, what formula do I use to calcualate the diameter?

If you measure around the balancer, 1/10th of the distance around it will be 36 degrees. 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 of the way around is every 90 degrees. You can use a cloth measuring tape or even a piece of string.

As an example: if the balancer is 25 inches around, 2.5" to the right of the tdc mark on the balancer is 36 degrees before TDC.

If you know the circumference, dividing by 3 will be pretty close to the diameter. If you have a calculator, 3.14 will be closer.

What a tip. I have tried several and they seem to stay put for about 15 seconds and bam off they come neatly stripped by the timing tab after the air flow lifted the end up.

If to much stuff in the way? how do you plan on putting the
tape on the balancer?

let alone getting it clean so the tape will stick

Because of the crankshaft pulley/belts, I can't get a ruler across the face of the balancer to accurately measure its diameter. I can, however, rotate the engine to clean the balancer and apply the tape.

So, what's easier...Removing the crankshaft pulley or posting a question here?

There's always one...

why don't you use "white out" ? The stuff won't come off anything.

3.14 x diameter = circumference.

So I guess circumference divided by 3.14 = diameter (if I got the math right).

IMHO, smaller is better for balancers..
Car will accelerate quicker with a lighter balancer.. I use a 6' balancer on my 406...

tapes suck, i cant get them to stay on either.

i took my harmonic balancer off and permanently degreed it
with : a calculator, a set of dividers, a thin file, and some paint.
