Default Clutch Linkage? See pics

Getting ready to pull this 4 spd tranny with the engine. See the clutch linkage here in the pics: What should be disconnected so that the tranny can come on out? Does that big arm disconnect from the base at the block? Looking for a nice and easy ride out.

Start by removing the vertical clutch rod. It connect the clutchfork & Z-bar. The clutchfork can remain in the tranny.

The big tube on the left is the Z-bar. Remove it from the block. You'll need to unbolt the other end of it which is attached to the frame via a bracket. Save all the peces. The Z-bar once disconnected from the frame bracket should just fall/pull right out leaving the stud still in the block.

Looks like you're missing the grease fitting for the Z-bar. (Hole in the bar)

What Jughead said, although I think there used to be just a plug in that hole. They fall out after a few years...

Hi

I think the spring connected to the horizontal rod is connected the wrong way around. It should pull the rod forward in order to raise the clutch pedal.

Another piece I don't have. Thanks Gunther.

Never had the spring when I removed my linkage.

79vetter: don't forget to un-do the shifter, linkage and speedo cable.

That was just what I was going to ask: Where should the shifter and linkage be disconnected--closer to the actual shifter or at the transmission body itself?

There are two springs on the rod. One goes forward and the other goes back. You only have the rear one. They keep the linkage from rattling.

The whole thing should come off. Take the pin out on the clutch release fork near the bellhousing, remove the rod, and finally remove the Z-bar. The rod coming off the clutch through the firewall can stay there, but now will be a good time to replace the rubber seal.

I have the Z-bar and horizontal bar off but what about the connections underneath the actual shifter? I took off the shifter ball and T piece in the interior on the shifter--will the remaining "stick" just drop straight down when the rest of the tranny is unbolted or should I disconnect those shifting linkages underneath the shifter itself?

Get under there and disconnect the linkages at each end of the linkages (3 including reverse). The shifter can stay on the frame while the tranny drops, or you can unbolt it to clean it. Also, unplug the speedometer and unbolt the backup light switch - plus any other wires a 79 might have that others don't have. On the other side, remove the cables from the starter motor.

Don't forget about the driveshaft as well. Or more specifically to take precautions of making a mess or dropping the yoke and possibly damaging it.
