Default Advance Springs

We set up our advance by removing the springs and setting it at 38 degrees at 2800 rpm. When we put the springs in and rechecked it the advance was at 35 degrees at 2800. I assume this means I should get softer springs. Went to Checker and they did not know what I was talking about. Where can I find an assortment of springs to use?

You need to rev it higher to see where the rest of the advance (if there is any more) comes in. In some cases the springs themselves are stiff enough to limit total but it looks like yours (all but 3º by 2800) aren't very stiff. In any case, I prefer setting total with the springs installed so I know what I'm actually getting and not what I should be getting.

When I went looking for springs, my local parts store said they do not carry them.

After looking at the high performance parts section I found a distributor recurve kit that comes with the new distributor cams and 3 sets of springs. All that for only $7.99

So they do not carry the individual springs, but they do carry an ignition recurve kit. Try asking for that at your local parts store.

My local auto parts store stocks advance kits from Mr.Gasket. The HEI kit has weights and springs. For points type dist. (what I needed) it was just 3 sets of springs.....the #928 kit. It bothered me that the package didn't list which springs were heavy, medium, light. The light weight springs (black) were obvious....smaller wire diameter and much shorter coil length. The gold and silver springs are identical as far as wire diameter and coil length. After contacting Mr gasket they inform me that gold is heavy and silver is medium. Maybe the heavy and medium are made from different types of material?????

advance curve kit gm univ
This kit provides full advance between 2,000 and 2,800 RPMs. You get maximum power and engine acceleration. The kit contains all required weights, springs and bushings.

Model Number: 925A

(this is the kit with 3 sets of springs)

Since MPSJM removed the spring THEN set the timing, wouldn't it have maxed out the mechanical advance as soon as it fired, allowing him to set the timing at the MAX mechanical movement? The limits caused by the springs were removed.

According to Lars paper thats what I did. You are correct it maxes the mech advance righ away. Its my understanding if the springs are correct I should be able to get back to 38 degrees after I put the springs back. The problem, or apperent problem was it would only go to 35 degrees when the springs were put back. So I was wondering if I should get softer springs.

Default advance springs

lars told us at the tuning for beer in va. that he found 1 silver and 1 black to usually be the correct springs to use to get your max advance by 2800 rpm....so i'd start with that

Does he use the 1 blk and 1 silver spring with stock weights or does he use the weights and cam in the kit?

Shoptek, that's the reason I prefer to check it with the springs installed. In some cases the springs themselves will be fully extended before the weights are and, like in this case, will limit the amount of total. The goal in setting total is to set the amount of advance the engine actually sees, not the amount that you get before reinstalling the springs.

Default distributor springs

lars said to throw the weights that come in the kit in the trash... he found that the quality was poor and that the holes egged in no time, the stock weights are the ones to use

Yup - he threw a set in the trash - right in front of me this afternoon.
Use the springs - chuck the weights.
