Default Urgent repaint Question- Lars?

Yes its been painted for less than a week but this weekend its going in for a repaint. The runs and drips are too much for me.... I already screwed up a couple of places and at the very least the rear bumper needs a repaint.

I'm gonna sand it down and respray the base and clear this weekend. My plan is to sand the runs out and wet sand down to 600 grit and respray overtip of the existing clear.

I don't need to seal off this paint do I? the cut sheet for the clear says " after 3 days, DCU2002 must be sanded before recoating with primer, color or clear."

I'm going to ask PPG tech about it but would like your thoughts. I'm spraying DBC base and DCU2002 Polyurethane clear.

Mike,
Are the runs in only the clear coat? You can wet sand the clear and re-spray that without having to do the whole basecoat/clearcoat thing again. Would be a lot cheaper and easier. Also when I painted my IROC I used an activator that cured the clear in ~4 hours. It was a little expensive but you knew what you had PDQ. Just a suggestion, and I feel your pain, first car I painted when I was fifteen and I just had to have black on a charger that had seen better days. I was so damned nervous I would screw up-I forgot to paint the damn spoiler deal under the back bumper the first time. After a week(not including body-work) and three times of trying paint I finally got it out of the shop and proceeded to show my pride to the naysayer's. I drove the seven miles to the stop-light to turn into our parking lot "hang-out". I was elated I had accomplished my goal it was beautiful then I was promptly rear-ended and had that damn spoiler thing in my back seat . Just thought I'd share that with you, because it can be worse. Oh yeah the insurance paid off, I promtly built a '69 Chevelle and only had to paint it twice .

Good Luck

I sanded through in a couple of areas and there are a couple of flaws that were going to forever bother me. So I figure I'll get it all done now and the flaws in the paint won't be there to nag me like my wife.

I have enough base and clear to complete the job.... so cost is not a factor.

if you sand it with 600, you should be able to re-clear with no problems. I used almost the same clear on my car, and its not that bad..i even cut and buffed about a 1.5 days after spraying.

You coulld also 600 the whole car and blow in only the areas that you went through the clear with the color. Then re clear the entire car. This is basically the same as when a panel is blended for a repair. It would save you on the base and would save time.

Ive been shooting PPG for over 20 years:

If its base/clear, GENTLY wet sand runs out. But be carefull. If you sand thru the clear, that panel MUST be re clear coated

So: Wet sand w/600 just enough to get rid of run. Then sand with 1200 to 2000. Then just buff out

If you wish to reclear entire car, wet sand with 600, and go for it

I have found time is not a factor in reclearing

The problem is I have sanded down to primer in one area, tried the razor blade trick and peeled the clear off with some of the base. I have a couple of areas that I did not prepare enough and a couple of flaws in the paint that would probably send me over the edge after loking at them for a year.

The car is getting another base coat no matter what is it alright to spray base directly over the clear? I'm going out in 15 minutes to sand the clear with my DA so if anybody knows anything bad about what I'm planning let me know.
